May 2019

Friday 12 and Saturday13 July

Welcome to the new Summer Term which starts on Tuesday 23 April.  Half term week will commence on Saturday 25 May with classes resuming from Saturday 1 June.

The last day of term for our 10 week classes will be Monday 8 July and the last day for our 12 week exam classes will be Monday 22 July.

Chadsworth Stage School was formed in 1969 and hence 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the show. The school has always had a tradition of holding special birthday shows every 5 years and hence the 50th will be no exception. On previous occasions we have held the show at Epsom Playhouse, the Adrian Mann Theatre at NESCOT and even at the village hall although holding the show at our natural home of the village hall lacks the sense of occasion and excitement of performing in a real theatre. This year we have decided to use the Hampton Hill Theatre in Hampton and, while not exactly on our doorstep, it is a purpose-built theatre and has good parking facilities nearby.

Because of the show in July it means that most of the classes will be spending part of their class time in preparing routines for the show which we trust will be a challenging and enjoyable experience for all our young performers.  Any profits from our show will, as with previous birthday shows, be given to a local children’s charity.

Key dates at the Hampton Hill Theatre are

Sunday 7 July – daytime dress rehearsal

Thursday 11 July – technical rehearsal with older students only

Friday 12 July 7pm – performance

Saturday 13 July – performances at 3pm and 7pm

While we understand that not all performers will be able to meet all these times we nevertheless hope to navigate around them as best as possible.

As for costs, we will of course need to meet the expenses of hiring the theatre for which we will need to charge for tickets. There will also be some charges for costumes but we will be trying to keep these as low as possible and, indeed, to use costumes we already have.

I hope everyone will get behind us and support us in this endeavour and indeed, help us to raise some money for charity.

Following the 50th Birthday Show and, after being involved with Chadsworth since 1991, I have decided that it is time for me to step down and hand over the running of the school to someone with younger ideas and greater energy.

As we have already announced, Christina Kandrettis will be taking over the school from September 2019. Christina already runs a successful school in Thames Ditton – Impact Dance Studios – and is already a familiar face since she herself is in fact an ex-Chadsworth student.

Christina will be organising a meeting with all parents later in the term where she will be able to answer any of your concerns or questions. The meeting is planned to take place in the village hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 6 June.

The semi-final round of the 2019 British Arts Awards competition recently took place at NESCOT with those items which had gained honours in the first round of the competition held in the village hall back in December. We were pleased to have six entries from Chadsworth in the semi-finals where they competed with performers from other schools in the South East region. Out of the six entries, five of our items were selected to compete in the finals of the competition to be held in May.

This year we will be holding our one week summer workshop at the village hall during the week commencing Monday 29th July. The week will involve everyone in acting, singing and dancing and will lead to “putting on a show” for family and friends on the Friday evening (2nd August).

Please can I ask that all parents double check their children’s dancewear uniforms. As you probably know, uniform can be provided by the School and for further information, or to order any items, please contact your class teacher or the school office.

We held two exam sessions last term – firstly in March there were the ISTD exams in modern dance where we gained a number of distinctions and, secondly, in April we held LAMDA drama exams in acting, verse and prose, singing and musical theatre. The results of the drama exams are yet to come through but we are confident of receiving some good results.

In our Saturday morning classes at the Claygate Village Hall we have a number of half-hour classes which are aimed primarily at our 4 to 6 year olds which are

In the Main Hall            09.15 – 09.45    ISTD Grade 2 modern

                                      09.45 – 10.15    ISTD Grade 1 tap

                                      10.15 – 10.45    ISTD Grade 1 modern

                                      10.45 – 11.15    ISTD Primary modern

                                      11.05 – 11.45    ISTD Primary tap

In the Small Hall           10.15 -  10.45    RAD Primary ballet

                                      10.45 – 11.15    Bollywood Babes

Also, on a Saturday, we offer for a similar age group a “Starlets” Dance Club at 11am to 11.45 at the Holy Trinity Church Hall with a junior drama class on a Wednesday from 3.45pm to 4.30. For slightly younger ones, around ages 3 and 4, we offer a dance and movement class from 4.15 to 4.45 on Thursdays in the small Village Hall.

I hope you all have an enjoyable term with us and please feel free to contact the school office if you have any questions or queries.
